Tesco reports rise in its food waste by 4k tonnes despite increase in surplus food donations.

Their Annual Report reveals an increase in food waste came predominantly from Produce, Bakery and Chilled categories. Aggregated data currently provided by the wider retail industry. Tesco are currently working with supplier partners to reduce surplus food and donate to people in need where it does exists. The report revealed donations have increased and is set to increase again this year.

This year 38k tonnes were safe for human consumption, 5k went to people in need, 16k went to animal feed, 16k went to AD plants and no food was sent to landfill.

“Transparency and measurement are essential for identifying industry-wide hotspots, and in tackling the root causes of food waste,” Tesco says. “We need clear, category-specific measures of food waste, rather than the aggregated data currently provided by the wider retail industry.”
