Supermarkets powered by food waste

Ten Sainsbury's supermarkets across the UK are powered by food waste and more are planned. In partnership with food waste management company ReFood, food waste is collected from depots and converted into gas in an anaerobic digestion (AD) plant.

The gas created in this process is then exported to the national gas grid which generates the electricity to power and heat the stores.

This partnership has produced almost 50m KWh of gas so far. Whilst still being committed to donating surplus edible food waste to charities, this has significantly reduced utility bills, created waste management jobs and reduced food waste to landfill.
